The Elephant

Not sure if I should be posting this but it is just too funny not to. We had seen a clip of LMFAO performing their song "Sexy and I Know It" on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. My dad had recorded it and showed it to us the next day. The kids loved the beat of the song and were dancing along, but I didn't realize how much they were really paying attention to the TV. If you've never seen the clip or their music video (I can't find any links to post on here because of copyrights with YouTube and stuff), one of the guys rips off his pants and has these red speedo-type underwear with a long elephant trunk coming off the front. It is so cheesy and unexpected that it's quite hilarious. I did notice Conor pause and look, but didn't say anything and just went back to dancing, so I thought nothing of it. Until...a couple days later, I had my stethoscope out to listen to Riley's lungs and Conor likes to play with it. After he got tired of listening to hearts, I saw him wrap the stethoscope between his legs from front to back and move his hips like he was dancing. When I asked him what he was doing, he said, "it's an elephant!" I couldn't help but laugh out loud.

And more laughs....
For show-and-tell at school one day, Conor had to bring a stuffed animal. He chose a soft plush cheetah, so on the way there, I asked him if he had chosen a name for the cheetah. He paused only a second before deciding to name him Conor. When I asked him why he chose that name he said, "Because Conor is the greatest...name...EVER!"

Halloween

The end of October found Riley very sick. I suppose all those new germs from her new friends got to her. I got called home from work because she had a fever (luckily, my boss was extremely understanding despite it being only my third week of work and the first week I had privileges to assist in the OR and I got called out on a surgery afternoon). And luckily, my dad had the next day off work already so she was able to stay home with him. She was extremely sleepy and clingy so we just kept an eye on her that day, but when we started to notice her wheezing and working really hard to breathe and the fever wasn't going down with meds, I took her to urgent care, because of course, it was Friday night. She ended up on steroids, antibiotics and nebulizer treatments. We had to a make a second trip to urgent care on Saturday to make sure her oxygen saturation increased from the 92% it had been (it did go up). So by Monday night the 31st, she was feeling better but not great.

We managed to still have a great Halloween, the first time we were able to be with extended family for Halloween. It worked out great. After work/school, we came home for some Jack-o-Lantern pizza. Andy, Leah and Carmen came over to join us. Then we headed out to Eden Prairie Mall where they had indoor trick-or-treating. We just made a loop around the mall and most of the stores had someone at the door to pass out treats. They even had a band. Conor and Carmen had a blast, but Riley was really tired and worn out. She mostly wanted to ride in the stroller, didn't want to say trick or treat, and wouldn't let us take her pacifier. However, if you tried to take her candy bucket, she pulled back and sternly said no.
We came home and stopped by a few of the neighbors we know, then headed in for bed. Trick or treating here occurs more in the evening as opposed to the afternoon like it was in Illinois.

Cupcakes and Pumpkins

We received a sweet Halloween package from Turk and Kari, Riley's godparents, in the mail just before Halloween. One of the contents was a package of Halloween cupcakes to bake and decorate. Conor had a blast making all the silly faces. Here is the finished product!
Carving our jack-o-lanterns...Conor loved pulling out all the guts, but Riley wanted nothing to do with that goop touching her hands, she barely got close even with the spoon. Grandma is an expert at pumpkin carving, so we let Conor help with the design and Grandma cut.

Playing in the Leaves

We had the best of both worlds when it comes to fall fun. We had a great big yard--unlike our small strip of land in Illinois--but we didn't have to do much of the work of raking. I tried to help a little, but Mom mostly mowed up the leaves and bagged them with a little help from Dad. I did a little raking, but didn't have to do much. Because my parents helped take care of the leaves in our neighbors yard as well, we were able to make a HUGE pile of leaves to play in. It took Riley a few jumps and tosses into the leaves to decide whether or not she liked them but eventually she giggled as hard as Conor did on his first jump! Even Adam and I jumped in. Reminded me of my childhood, when we jumped out of the big maple tree in the front yard into the pile of leaves below! We were able to spend several days playing in the leaves before we had to get rid of them.

Twin Cities Marathon

On October 2, the day before he started his new job, Adam ran his first-ever marathon...26.2 miles all at once! Temps started out in the low 40s, but warmed up to the 70s by the time he finished. The kids stayed home with Grandma and Grandpa so I could go watch and cheer him on--a great inexperience in and of itself. It felt like a different kind of race of my own to follow the map and find the shortest route to get there, find a place to park, find a place to stand along the race course and yell and cheer while he ran by before jumping in the car to find my next spot. I was bursting with pride for him so much that it felt so emotional each time he ran past me and especially when he finished. So proud of your hard work, commitment, and motivation Adam!

And he finished...with an excellent first marathon time of 4:22:10.

Family Time

We have had lots of great family time. On one of those occasions, I captured this great moment of Conor and Riley bombarding Laura and Nick. These kids absolutely love being around those two, and they have been great sports about taking time out to come visit us as much as they can.

Back on the Map....

Ok, so it's been a while as we've adjusted to all the major changes here. But...here goes, some long overdue updates from the last 6 weeks or so....

First Few Weeks

Our first few weeks in Minnesota were somehow both exhausting and relaxing, stressful and calm, productive and lazy. Adam had a whole week before starting work and I ended up taking two weeks. We did some unpacking and organizing, including cleaning out the crawlspace under my parents' stairs to make room for our stuff so we won't have to rent a storage unit--it was fun to reminisce about some of the old things they kept...from our childhoods and theirs! We also toured several daycares, found a bank, and spent hours playing outside in the yard (yeah...a YARD!!) and the neighborhood park.

Breakfast the first morning in our new home
Sleeping in his sleeping bag on top of the bed. He never sleeps in one place two nights in a row. It may be at the head of his bed, or turned around with his head at the foot of the bed, maybe on his floor, and once and a while on my floor. I've even woke up to find him at the foot of my bed without even knowing how or when he got there. Sometimes under the covers, sometimes on top of them, sometimes with extra blankets, sometimes with none at all, sometimes in the sleeping bag. The worst is when it is several of these situations within the first hour after we put him in his room!
Future businesswoman--multitasking on the phone and writing a memo
Concentrating on writing Grandma's birthday card
Enjoying the nice weather by reading books outside and having a picnic. Can't beat that!
Always reading and become even closer and closer siblings...they both adore each other.
Grandma and Conor like to play Angry Birds. Here Conor is showing his Angry Birds face, since I am interrupting his game to take his picture. He is also supporting the Elon Phoenix on a football Saturday.
Most weeks require Adam resorting to watching the NIU Huskies game on the computer since they are not always on TV here. Riley loves to listen along.
We found an old record player while cleaning out the crawlspace. Conor LOVED going through the records and listening to the stories and songs. It was funny how he kept calling it a re-CORD player (like we pronounce the verb) because he has never heard it any other way.
Conor has really loved spending time with the cats, especially Rusty, who spends more of his time resting around where we are usually hanging out. Early on, Conor was even very helpful with feeding them. Unfortunately, the novelty of that has worn off pretty quickly.
